Conflict prevention and peacebuilding are necessary requirements, particularly for societies in the imminent danger of entering into a conflict situation and those in a post-conflict situation, having emerged from a conflict. Peacebuilding in pre-conflict situations as well as post-conflict situations is strongly linked to conflict prevention, to preempt the entering into or the return to a conflict situation again.
The study that SAPRI is initiating on this topic focuses on identifying potential conflicts; recognizing the root causes of conflicts; developing indices for early identification of conflicts; preventive strategies; economic development of affected areas; socio-political empowerment of marginalized groups; transitional justice in post conflict situations; and building inclusive / shared societies.
The study of best practices in the transition from conflict to post conflict societies and diffusing tensions in the period that precedes a potential conflict will provide useful information for the research on this topic.
